Merck Serono Limited has confirmed that they are discontinuing Glucophage (metformin) 500 mg and 1000 mg powder for oral solution in sachets due to unforeseen manufacturing issues.

Glucophage 500 mg powder for oral solution in sachets: The Glucophage 500 mg powder for oral solution in sachets is out of stock from Merck Serono (there may be very limited stock in the supply chain). Pack sizes: 30’s, 60’s.

Glucophage 1,000 mg powder for oral solution in sachets: Some stock of Glucophage 1000 mg powder for oral solution in sachets is expected to be available until end of May 2014, however this strength is also being discontinued. Pack sizes: 30’s, 60’s.

The relevant regulatory bodies have been informed. This does not affect Glucophage SR Tablets (prolonged release metformin) or Glucophage tablets (immediate release metformin) which remain available in the UK.

If you usually receive metformin in the powdered form, it is important to discuss your options with your healthcare team as soon as possible.
